Epic Perversion (2014-2019)

After moving to Chicago in 2014, my work continued to engage the body but shifted toward sculpture, installation and video. Books, furniture, garments and toys became my raw materials—familiar things loaded with gender, sexuality, taste, nostalgia and ideas of normality that felt equally fabricated. The American Midwest revealed itself to be a treasure trove of thrift stores and plastic treasures. I collected them obsessively, then assembled, deconstructed, multiplied, modified and performed them until they became something else. Appearance and function were altered or even denied. The familiar became strange, seductive, excessive and sometimes ridiculous. I wanted the work to demand attention. To be bold, irreverent and impossible to ignore; to seduce people into embracing what they might otherwise dismiss.
